Recipe + Ritual: Sage Salt

SAGE

A helping hand
Brushes away
Stagnancy
Lurking in the
Corners.

Boons of clarity,
Protection
And longevity
Drift into the cracks
Between the
Floorboards.

Revitalized and
Verdant.

On Sunday, I harvested the last of the sage in my garden and made a batch of sage salt. The rest of my harvest is currently in the dehydrator and will end up in my Wisdom bath salt soaks for the holiday season.

Here’s the recipe if you’d like to make some sage salt, too.

INGREDIENTS

• Fresh sage (1 part) Note: You can also use dried sage if that’s all you have on hand.

• Salt (1 part)

TOOLS

• Knife and cutting board, blender, or food processor

• Airtight jar for storage

INSTRUCTIONS

Gather your sage. As you begin to work, take three slow, steady, deep breaths, and allow the crisp, camphor-like scent to envelop you. Sift through your sage and remove the stems. Discard any other woody parts, too.

Take a break. Close your eyes, check in with your heartspace, and say hello to any feelings you notice. Acknowledge them and allow them to be there. What are their shapes? Their colors? Ask what these feelings want to tell you, and then be present and listen. Say, “I believe you,” and thank them for their wise messages. Open your eyes and take another deep breath.

Chop the sage by hand with a knife and a cutting board, or place it in a blender or food processor. Give thanks for the protection and wisdom the sage offers you today, as well as for the future support it’ll provide when you need it.

Once the sage is chopped, add the salt and mix or blend the two ingredients thoroughly.

Store your sage salt in an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dry place. I keep mine in the refrigerator.

WAYS TO USE YOUR SAGE SALT WHEN YOU NEED AN EXTRA BOOST OF CLEARING, PROTECTION, GOOD LUCK, AND/OR WISDOM:

• Sprinkle into soups, stews, dressings, and poultry dishes.

• Add to a hot bath (place in a muslin bag for easy cleanup).

• Sprinkle some underneath your front door mat.

• Make Sage Salt water – Add two tablespoons to a tea infuser or tea bag, and place in your largest mug. Add boiling water, and steep for 15-20 minutes.

Add your sage water to your mop bucket or laundry basin to clear and protect your home, bed linens, and clothing. I love to add it to the laundry with thrifted items to remove any old, stagnant energy that may still be there from its previous owner.

Create a room mist by filling a small spray bottle with equal parts witch hazel and sage salt water. You can add a few drops of lavender, rosemary, and frankincense essential oils for an extra energetic boost.
